Life is looking a little different now and I’ve been thinking a lot about new routines. Specifically which ones I want to keep. The last few months have given many of us a chance to see the world with fresh eyes, looking at our lives from a different perspective.
That might be more time with family and less time working, it might be working from home instead of an office, it might be the opportunity to move somewhere new.
It has taken a while, but I’ve started to adjust to being on furlough and build some new routines for myself. I already had a few in place: daily dog walks, cooking, more effective workouts, no crawling out of bed at the crack of dawn and sitting in traffic for an hour (yay!) Now I’ve started to work on my writing more and embrace some freelance opportunities. I can see how my life might look if I were able to make a living from writing and I like it. I like it a lot.
But it’s scary too. What if these lessons we’ve learned over the last few months get pushed aside and forgotten in the race to go back to normal? We’ve had a taste of something different, some of it good and some bad, but many of us have probably seen things we want to keep. Less commuting, less spending, more self-care.
I hope we can all embrace the routines we want to hold on to and let go of the ones that don’t serve us. There are some things I want back, but there are more things I won’t miss. While we can all make a few changes ourselves, there are some bigger ones that we need to embrace as a society.
But for now, I’m going to focus on using this time to live the life I want, however long it lasts. I’m going to make whatever steps I can towards change and see what happens next.
